The Man Next Door Knows

The story

Amanda's husband calls to say his deal is dragging on and he will be away several more days. She tells him it is fine, the way she always does. Then a new neighbor shows up at her door asking to borrow supplies, starting with a light bulb. Next he asks to use her bathroom, and she waits downstairs, asking herself what she is doing.

On his way out he praises how easily she puts people at ease and calls her by name, though she never gave it. She tells her friend Sarah, who finds it exciting, says everyone knows her husband cheats, and wonders whether the neighbor is the person who once told Amanda the truth.

• The new neighbor: Polite, observant and a little too well informed, he knows her name before she says it.
• Sarah: Amanda's confidante, blunt about her husband and quick to push her toward some fun.
