Staycation with my fiancee's mother

The story

Jake and Sophie are engaged, but meeting her mother, Veronica Parker, wrecks the plan. At the family house, Sophie's father is running late, Sophie keeps glowing about the ring, and Veronica sizes up the man who keeps her daughter out so late.

After dinner and a toast to the couple, Sophie goes up to bed. Veronica is not tired. She claims a dance with the man marrying her daughter, tells him to breathe, and promises she is harmless, for tonight anyway.

Next morning Sophie has rushed into town for work. Veronica asks Jake to help with a stretch, compliments him for a beginner, then mentions she is about to shower and he is welcome to join.

The characters

• Veronica Parker: Sophie's mother: confident, teasing, and in charge of every dance and every stretch.

Why watch it

Slow, polite seduction is the mode here. Everything happens inside one family house, with the fiancée upstairs or across town. The hook is Veronica's calm, which turns every ordinary request into a test of how long Jake can keep his composure. Episode 1 shows exactly where it starts.
