The story

Candy Lane is a street where the men leave early and a flag up outside a house means the woman inside could use a hand. Today the flag is Harriet's, his brother's wife, and her kitchen pipe is dripping again despite his repair.

He arrives with a flashlight, ends up soaked, and the repair turns personal. Harriet makes it plain that fixing the sink was only the first job.

Soon he's still on her floor when two more neighbors, Mrs. Vance and Mrs. Morello, appear in the doorway. They've hung around since breakfast, they say, and the street has one rule: every wife gets a turn. Harriet insists on going first, and the others will watch.
