My Mother-In-Law Wants To Be My Hall Pass

The story

Dan's wife jokes about a hall pass, and her mother, Margo, takes it seriously. Quietly, she asks whether he would use it. He says no at once, and she admits nobody has ever refused her that quickly.

Then Kate asks for coffee, and Dan makes it while his mother-in-law notes his racing heart. He says he is not a saint, just married. She mentions tomorrow's book club and dares him to say no to her face.

In episode 2 he sticks to his answer, and she says she likes how he says it. When Kate calls to check in, he bluffs that all is well, and Margo tells him to unzip her.

The characters

• Dan: A husband whose polite refusal gets harder to keep up with each scene.
• Margo: Kate's mother, openly flirting and curious how long his no will last.
• Kate: His wife, who started it with a joke and is sure he is a saint.

Why watch it

A married man holds the line while someone enjoys pushing it. The hook is the contrast: a loyal husband, a trusting wife and a mother-in-law who treats every refusal like a game she intends to win. Episode 1 serves up the coffee-pot standoff.
