Yes Professor

The story

Mrs. Bree Whitlock teaches English, and one student has failed her class by watching her rather than taking notes. She keeps him behind after the bell and makes him repeat every instruction. She sends him off, catches him lingering, and offers a retake tomorrow plus a private lesson that night at nine.

When he arrives late, she has him read a line of verse and keep eye contact while he does. She knows exactly what's been distracting him and tests the theory. Her husband, she says, believes she's grading papers, and a student in her room would cost her everything, yet she continues. The real lesson, she tells him, starts with one reply from him.

The characters

• Mrs. Bree Whitlock: A confident English professor who treats every distraction as a teaching opportunity.
• The student: A distracted student who obeys every instruction and can't stop looking.
• Her husband: The offstage spouse who believes she's busy with a stack of marking.
