The story

Jake has failed three tests, and a single pass is all that keeps his scholarship alive. Professor Vaughn tells him to come to her office after five, shuts the door, and says his problem is distraction. She proposes a different route to a pass: secrecy guaranteed, even from the dean, with the outcome depending on how good he really is. The door is locked, and it is his move.

He refuses, saying he has a girlfriend. Vaughn is amused and says the offer never expires. The girlfriend, Maya, is the top student in her class, and offers to study with him, no favors needed. Yet during their study break his thoughts drift back to the professor.

The characters

Professor Vaughn: The professor who fails him, then offers a private route to a passing grade.
Jake: A scholarship student one grade away from losing everything, tempted anyway.
Maya: His girlfriend, brilliant and loyal, who just scored top marks in Vaughn's class.
