The story

David's girlfriend, Ashley, begged her sister to save him a seat in the evening plumbing course she teaches. Everyone else dropped out, so he is alone in the workshop.

The practical test: repair a fitting she loosened herself before ten, while she watches closely. David admits that plumbing was never the point. He came for her. She recalls Thanksgiving, when he carried her bag out and held on to it for ages.

Ashley appears in the doorway, fresh from pottery three doors down, and promises to drive him home at ten. Her sister says he is very hands-on. Once Ashley leaves, the instructor confirms his result is in the bag and points him toward the door lock.
