The Chief's Private Detail

The story

Everyone at the station knows the rule: touch the chief and you are out of a job. Cole, the rookie no one wants to ride with, expects to fade into the background.

Instead she assigns him to her nights, starting immediately. The squad laughs and tells him to enjoy the park beat.

Cole guesses she is just short on officers. She corrects him. Everyone else looks away when she walks past; he holds her stare. And the policy, she points out, only covers his hands, not hers. She sends him off with a promise that she is not finished.

The characters

• The chief: Runs the station, sets the rules and knows exactly where they stop.
• Cole: A rookie with no partner and a habit of meeting her eyes.
