The story

Late to formation, the corporal offers an excuse about the gate, and Sergeant Holly is not interested. She catches him staring, orders him to her cabin and assigns pull-ups until his hands go numb. Then something about his reaction earns him a fresh scolding and a dismissal.

He apologizes, and she announces that his punishment comes tonight, under a table, until a general's arrival interrupts.

With the general asleep, the corporal is free to go. Then a soldier named Jessica brings in Holly with a twisted hip, unable to walk, and the corporal volunteers a chiropractic routine. Holly warns that no man lays hands on her and escapes unpunished. Jessica notices something about him and is sent out.

The characters

Sergeant Holly: Commanding officer, loud, exacting and quick to turn discipline into private punishments after hours.
The corporal: Nervous soldier who arrives late, stares too long and cannot stay out of trouble.
Jessica: Fellow soldier who brings the injured sergeant to the corporal and notices more than anyone wants.
