Talia Undercover

The story

Talia Reid expects a job interview. Instead Mr. Vaughn opens with a riddle about time, tests her in a handful of languages and asks whether she is single. Her answers hold, so he walks her across a floor of a thousand employees, promising pay and responsibility few of them will see, if she earns it.

On a business trip, Mr. Vaughn introduces his wife Viviana with a joke about their marriage, and a remark on Talia's hair hints she is not the first assistant. Then a bathroom break becomes the test: someone tells her to keep the door ajar, and Talia says she is shy only if they are.

• Mr. Vaughn: High-flying executive who travels constantly and tests people before he trusts them.
• Viviana: His wife, introduced with a joke about their marriage and quick to remark on Talia's hair.
