My Father's New Queen

The story

The king announces that his new wife is now the prince's mother, and the court laughs as the prince kneels to a woman his own age. That night, while the king sleeps off his wine, she calls the prince to her chambers.

He trembles and says she belongs to his father. She does not flinch. She comes from House Vale, the king's enemy in a long war, and she lets him choose: report her to the king or follow through on what he began.

Next he admits he said nothing. She calls him a traitor already, then reveals her brother's army marches on the walls. When riders appear two days early, she demands his answer.
