I Picked Up a Hitchhiker

The story

On a hot highway, she asks the driver if he is a serial killer, takes his answer, and says she left her boyfriend at a gas station fifty miles back. Home is two hundred miles away, but wherever he is headed will do.

The heat gets to her, and the next motel is forty miles on, with one room left. She is fine with that. He hesitates.

In episode 2 she asks, grinning, whether this is his first time checking a woman into a motel. A call from her ex, Tyler, ends with her saying she is gone. Then she asks for a towel and tells the trucker to come closer.

The characters

• The trucker: Quiet, surprised that anyone like her would ride with him, and slow to believe it.
• The hitchhiker: Just left her ex at a gas station, sunburned, direct, and hard to refuse.
• Tyler: Her ex, abandoned fifty miles back, heard only through an angry phone call.

Why watch it

Hot highway, long drive, one motel room: a confined-space romance with a slow build and a driver who cannot believe his luck. The hook is how casually she makes every decision for both of them. Episode 1 gets the truck moving and ends at the motel door.
