Stepsister Summer

The story

A call delivers the surprise: Brooklyn, a stepbrother she knows only by name, will be staying in the house. She has an idea at once, and by his arrival the visit is mapped out.

He turns up polite and a little in the dark. She welcomes him, mentions that his father praised his brains, and tells someone on the phone that he knows nothing yet. Her theory is that men always believe a move was their own by day two.

Later she asks him upstairs to reach something she can't. She tells him to stop overthinking, because wanting this is allowed. They must keep the noise down, and a pause only sets up her next question: where were we?

The characters

• The stepsister: Hostess and mastermind, relaxed on the surface, with the whole two weeks already mapped out.
• Brooklyn: The new stepbrother, praised for being smart and slow to notice he is the plan.
