The story

Riley hauls Jack out of bed, fusses over her outfit, and tells him her stepmother, Regina, is going to love him. She has not seen Regina in two years.

Regina arrives with hugs for her stepdaughter and an approving smile for the boyfriend, remarking that he is better looking than advertised and that Riley has landed a strong one. Riley fills the room with college talk: three papers due, nights in the library, and the time Jack made a long drive to deliver her coffee.

Then somebody suggests dancing. In episode 2 a spill during the dance sends Jack to help someone clean up, and Riley finds the two of them together in a room.

The characters

Riley: Jack's girlfriend, a college student buried in papers and eager to show him off.
Jack: Her devoted boyfriend: polite, strong, and about to be tested.
Regina: Riley's stepmother, back after two years, warm, direct, and quick to compliment.

Why watch it

Meet-the-family setups work best when the compliment lands a beat too warm. Here a girlfriend is so proud of her man that she misses what her stepmother notices. The reunion, the coffee story and the dance floor all sit in episode 1.
