Room Service

The story

On their fifth anniversary the couple is back in the same hotel room as every year, and he suspects his wife thinks the room itself will fix things. While she showers, a knock brings the maid with yesterday's fruit order. He doesn't even like fruit, and she knows it.

The maid teases that he just likes watching her work. Then the wife calls out from the shower: who is he talking to?

The answer is room service, which proves useful when she asks for her conditioner from a pink bag. The maid carries it into the bathroom, gets thanked and returns with a clock running. About twelve minutes remain, and ten will do.

The characters

• The husband: Five years in, he lingers at the door longer than a plate of fruit deserves.
• The maid: Delivers the daily fruit, understands exactly why he keeps ordering it and takes the risk.
• The wife: Books the same room every year, hoping the place will do the work.
