House Rules

The story

Home from college, he walks into a house where Dad is on a business trip and his stepmother, Veronica, has been planning something. She welcomes him warmly, then announces a set of rules. Rule one: obey her. Rule two: his girlfriend gets no phone calls today.

He protests, pointing to the girlfriend, to his father, to the fact that she's family. Veronica answers with a hot tub invitation and a shower schedule.

Next, the list grows. Rule four says he can't act as if he slept through the night before. When his girlfriend shows up at the door, Veronica suggests a very different plan for the visit.

• Veronica: The stepmother with a rulebook, a calm voice and a week without her husband.
• The stepson: Home from college with a girlfriend and a conscience, both under pressure.
• His girlfriend: Excited to surprise him with a visit, and unaware the house has new management.

Why watch it

Made for fans of the stepmom-in-charge setup who like clear mechanics: numbered rules, a girlfriend on her way and a lead who keeps saying no. The tension is in the pauses. Hear Veronica's first two rules in episode 1 and judge how long a week at home can hold up.
