My Girlfriend's Stepmom

The story

Day one at Chloe's family home, and the first lesson Jake gets is that nothing is kept secret here. Ten minutes later he meets Chloe's stepmother, Dana, in the one place he never planned to, and she finds his panic charming.

Chloe doesn't seem surprised. She asks him not to freak out and explains that this is a family tradition, one that includes her boyfriends and Dana. Dana's rules are simple: nobody touches her until she says, and if he keeps looking at her that way, the first rule goes out the window. He's told to wait, sit and keep still while the clock runs.

Chloe warns him not to stare, and Dana says she's very patient.

• Chloe: His girlfriend, relaxed about a family tradition she only half-explained.
• Dana: Her stepmom, who is patient, direct and keeps rules that bend in her favor.
