Her Stepmom Is the Boss

The story

Jake needed work, and his girlfriend knew someone: her stepmother, Margot Vey, who happens to be the boss. At his first meeting Margot reviews the quarterly numbers, spots a mistake on a slide and sends everyone out. Jake stays, and she praises him as the one man honest enough to speak up. She suggests he stay late, too.

He senses trouble, and his girlfriend is almost at the door, but a nine o'clock meeting in Margot's office is set anyway.

That night he tells his girlfriend he is working late. In truth he is working for Margot, who locks the door, notes how he reacts to her, and tells him to keep the job and let her handle the rest.

The characters

• Margot Vey: The boss and stepmother, sharp with numbers and sharper at reading people.
• Jake: A new hire with a girlfriend, a dream job and a very bad idea to resist.
• His girlfriend: Got him the job, and keeps calling to check that he is behaving.
