Kiss the Bride, Stepbro

The story

Ava's fiancé, Brad, keeps missing every wedding errand, so she hands the job to her stepbrother Leo. Tonight he plays the groom. She moves his hands from where Brad puts them to where she wants them, and Brad's track record does not come off well, though she still calls him nice.

Brad phones mid-rehearsal, hears who the stand-in is and approves on the spot, sure that Leo poses no threat. Leo takes that personally. His practice vows needle the groom, promising to notice her silences and to drop the pet name that replaces her real one.

Brad is still on the line when the script reaches the kiss. Ava decides to test his theory.

The characters

• Ava: The bride, rehearsing her own wedding with a substitute because the groom never shows up.
• Leo: Her stepbrother, drafted as stand-in groom and quietly offended at being called harmless.
• Brad: The absent fiancé, heard only over the phone, sure his bride is in safe hands.
